Turkey’s first private and second largest flat steel producer, Borçelik, was founded in 1990 and commenced production in 1994. Borusan Holding and ArcelorMittal, co-manage the company.
Borçelik, operating in its Gemlik facilities, which are situated 200 kilometers away from Istanbul and 28 kilometers from Bursa, enjoys a strategic advantage of its approximity to these two key industrial and commercial centres of Turkey, as well as to the port. Borçelik’s plant spans a total area of 240,000 m2, 118,000 m2 of which is indoors.
Borçelik produces hot-dip galvanized steel, cold-rolled annealed steel and pickled and oiled hot rolled steel, all of which are vitally important semi-finished inputs for the country’s manufacturers. Borçelik’s range of products consists of commercial, drawing, deep-drawing and extra-deep drawing steel, as well as bake-hardening, structural grades, rephosphorized, HSLA, enameling and dual phase. Borçelik materials are produced in the context of a dynamic organization with the most advanced technology available, while the company’s superior engineering and know-how capacities are utilized to provide the best possible logistical service to her customers.
Borçelik’s annual production capacity of 1,6 million tons consists of 700 ktons of cold rolled annealed and 900 ktons of hot-dip galvanized steel.
At the basis of Borçelik’s strong position in the market lies her dynamic workforce, innovation oriented approach, continuous investment to develop and grow, and customer-focused service and quality conception.
Following her decision in 1996 to apply “Total Quality Management” approach, Borçelik has become the first company in the steel industry to be awarded certificates of ISO 9001 Quality Management System in 1997, ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in 1998, OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System in 2000 and ISO TS 16949:2002 Automotive Management System in 2003. In June 2007, Borçelik was awarded ISO 10002 Complaints Management System certificate, being the first organization in the manufacturing sector and the third in all sectors to achieve it. Borçelik owes this achievement mostly to the Voice of Customer (VoC) system she has been applying since 2003. After 3 successful audits, Borcelik has also become the first company in the sector to be awarded ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Information Security Management Certificate in November 2007.
Besides her quality certificates, Borçelik was awarded EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Excellence Model National Quality Achievement Award in large enterprises category by TÜSİAD - KalDer (Turkish Industrials and Businessmen Association - Turkish Society for Quality) in 2001, Environment Award - Honourable Mension by Istanbul Chamber of Industry at the end of 2006 and JIPM Excellency Award by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance at the end of 2008, as a result of successful TPM applications since 2005. Borçelik has been implementing Lean 6 Sigma methodologies since 2002, managing all improvement activities taking advantage of this methodology.
