Borusan Culture Arts

Borusan Holding, as being one of the constant supporters of arts, contributed to the progress of Turkey since its foundation. Each value created is believed to be contributing to the economical and social improvement of the country; Borusan started its activities with Borusan Culture Arts (BKS) in 1997 with the aim of sharing the arts to the masses.

Borusan Culture Arts, which started to operate in its building located on Istiklal Street, the center of culture and arts in Istanbul, today continues its operations mostly cooperative with Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation, which mainly supports education, established by the founder of the Borusan Holding, Mr. Asım Kocabıyık.

BKS continuously carries out musical activities with The Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra, The Borusan String Quartet, The Children’s Choir and The Music Library; as well as awarding young and talented musicians with music scholarship since 2005. BKS, while carries its activities abroad, also acts as the Turkish representative of ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) which has over 50 member countries worldwide. In addition to that, it acts as an official member of IMC (International Music Council) which has over 60 member countries and the European wing EMC (European Music Council).

Apart from art activities, BKS also takes steps towards keeping and protecting cultural heritage. The ‘Ertug & Kocabiyik Publications’, which is a successful joint project of Ahmet Ertuğ, architect and photograph artist and Ahmet Kocabıyık Chairman of the Executive Board of Borusan Holding, provides collectors’ item valued books which reflects the heritage of the Ottoman, Byzantium, Roman and Hellenistic era books with academic texts and extraordinary photographs.

BKS also established the ArtCenter / Istanbul in 2008. The venue provides sources, support and studio space for experimental and innovative art projects. It shares the creative process with the community.

For the last five years, BKS is organizing the Mediterranean Contemporary Music Days with the cooperation of European cultural centers in Turkey. Due to the growth, BKS started to present this activity as ‘Istanbul New Music Days’ in 2010.

Istanbul’s significant role of being the European Capital of Culture in the year 2010, prompted Borusan Culture Arts to begin various new projects and launch the Borusan Music Library as a new performance venue. Borusan Music House, while holding classical, jazz, and world music workshops and contemporary exhibitions, it also creates opportunities for BKS to reach greater masses.

Borusan Culture Arts takes steps forward with the aim of supporting and presenting arts and creating new opportunities for young and talented musicians.
